Goygol: Azerbaijan's Most Photographed Lake

Goygol is a lake in the mountains south of Ganja, and it is on more Azerbaijani postcards than anything except the Baku skyline. The name means blue lake, and on a still day it earns it.

It formed the hard way. An earthquake in the twelfth century brought down a mountainside, the debris dammed a river, and the water backed up behind it.

What you actually do there

You look at it, you walk beside it, and you leave. That is not a criticism.

The lake sits in forest, surrounded by slopes that keep the wind off. Paths run along part of the shore. The water changes colour with the light and the season, which is why people come back with completely different photographs.

Two to three hours is a normal visit. Longer if you walk properly, and walking is the better version.

Getting there

From Ganja, by road, and that is the only sensible base. Ganja is about 360 kilometres from Baku, so this is part of a trip west rather than a day out from the capital.

The road up from the valley is normal until it is not. The final section is mountain road, and in poor weather it deserves respect.

The access question

Arrangements for entering the national park have changed over the years, and they are not something to guess at from an old blog post.

Check the current rule before you travel. If we are arranging the trip, we will confirm it as part of the booking rather than leaving you to discover it at a gate.

When to go

Late spring is the classic answer. Water is high, the forest is green, and the air is still cool.

Autumn is the better photograph. Colour comes into the slopes and the crowds thin out.

Midsummer works, with harsher light and more people. Winter is a different proposition entirely, dependent on the road and the weather, and not the season to plan a first visit around.

What to bring

Layers. It is meaningfully cooler here than in Ganja, and cooler again if cloud comes over.

Proper shoes if you intend to walk. Water and something to eat, because facilities are limited and the point of the place is not its cafes.

Pairing it with the rest of the west

Goygol works best as one leg of a western route. Ganja for the city. Naftalan if a spa stay interests you. The lake for the day you want to be outside.

Done that way, the long drive from Baku is carrying three destinations instead of one, which is the only arrangement that really justifies it.

Practical notes for the day

Phone signal at the lake is weak. Download a map before you set off, and agree a time and a meeting point with your driver.

Take your rubbish out with you. It is a protected site, bins are few, and the shoreline shows it by the end of the season.

What else is nearby

The smaller lakes in the same park see far fewer visitors, and some are within walking distance of the main one.

Ask locally which paths are open on the day. Conditions change with weather and season, and the answer on the ground is better than the answer online.
