A trip with older parents is not the same trip with fewer hours. It is a different plan, and treating it as a shortened version of your own is the usual mistake.
The good news is that this country suits it well. Distances between places are modest, meals are long by custom, and nobody is rushed at a table.
Two places in a day, not four
This is the single most useful rule on the page. A day with two stops and a long lunch works. A day with four stops does not, regardless of how close together they are.
The cost is not the walking. It is the accumulation of getting in and out of a car, standing, queueing and starting again.
Surfaces matter more than distance
Historic paving, uneven kerbs and long flights of steps cause far more difficulty than a kilometre of flat pavement. Our page on accessible travel here covers the detail of that.
The practical version is simple. Ask about the ground rather than about the distance.
Choose the season deliberately
Spring and autumn are considerably kinder than summer or winter. Heat and wind are both harder on older travellers than on the rest of a group.
If the dates are fixed and they fall in July, the day should be built around early mornings and indoor afternoons instead.
The private car does most of the work
It removes the walk at both ends of every journey, and it lets a day end early without a discussion. Our page on travelling with a driver explains why this is normal here rather than luxurious.
The vehicle itself matters too. A higher step into a minivan is harder than a lower one into a saloon car, so tell us which suits.
Museums are the friend of this trip
They are level, indoor, temperature controlled and full of places to sit. Our page on which Baku museums are worth it is a genuinely useful list for this kind of day.
An afternoon in one good museum beats a march between three mediocre ones.
The mountains are still possible
A drive into the hills with a long stop for lunch and a view is a real day out. It involves very little walking and it is one of the best things a visitor does here.
What does not work is a day whose reward is at the top of a path. Tell us which category you want and we will plan accordingly.
Rest is part of the itinerary
Build in a genuine afternoon off. Not a shorter day, an actual one where nobody leaves the hotel.
Trips that include one rest day in four go better than trips that do not. This is true of everybody and it is obvious with older travellers.
What to tell us
The dates, how far walking is comfortable, how long a car journey is manageable, and anything medical we should plan around.
We will build a route at that pace and tell you honestly which of your chosen places do not fit it.

Common questions
Is Azerbaijan a good destination for older travellers?
It can be very good, because the distances are short and the food culture is unhurried. The difficulty is the surfaces rather than the country.
How many places should a day contain?
Two, at most. A day built around three or four stops is the most common reason an older traveller has a bad afternoon.
What is the biggest practical obstacle?
Uneven ground. Historic streets, old paving and inconsistent kerbs cause far more trouble than distance does.
Which season is kindest?
Spring and autumn. Summer heat and winter wind are both harder on older travellers than on anybody else in the group.
Should we use a private car?
Almost always. It removes the walk at each end of a journey, and it means a day can be shortened without a negotiation.
Can we still see the mountains?
Yes, if the day is built around the drive and the view rather than around a walk. Several routes work exactly that way.
What about long drives?
Tell us how long is comfortable and we will plan stops accordingly. Two hours between breaks is a common answer and it changes the route.
What do you need from us?
The dates, the pace that suits, how far walking is comfortable, and anything medical we should plan around.
A day trip, an overnight route, a transfer, or a custom itinerary? Tell us and we will plan it.
