Choosing an Area to Stay in Baku

Baku makes this easy, because the part of the city visitors want is compact. Almost everything worth doing sits between the Old City, Fountains Square and the seafront, and you can walk all of it.

The real decision is not which district. It is how far from that walkable core you are willing to be, and what you are willing to pay for the last two hundred metres.

Inside or beside the Old City

The walled city is the most atmospheric place to sleep in Baku. Quiet at night, stone underfoot, and you wake up inside the thing you came to see.

The trade-offs are real. Lanes are uneven and often stepped, which is awkward with a suitcase and worse with a pushchair. Cars cannot always reach the door.

Staying just outside the walls gets you most of the benefit without any of that, and it is usually cheaper.

Around Fountains Square

The centre of the modern city, and the most convenient base for a first trip. Restaurants, shops, the metro and a short walk to both the Old City and the water.

It is busy in the evening, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on how you sleep.

The seafront

A room facing the Caspian is a pleasant thing and you pay for it. The boulevard is a five-minute walk from a great deal of accommodation that does not charge for the view.

Stay near the water rather than on it, unless the view is genuinely what you came for.

One street back

The most useful piece of advice on this page. Moving one or two streets away from the main squares reduces the price meaningfully and costs you a couple of minutes of walking.

At that distance you are still in the walkable core and still ahead of anyone relying on transport.

Further out

Anywhere within a fifteen-minute walk of the centre is fine. Beyond that, the metro is good and cheap, and the trip changes shape: you commute to the centre rather than living in it.

For a long stay or a tight budget that is a reasonable trade. For three nights it is not.

Near the airport

Only for a flight so early that the drive would be miserable. There is nothing around the airport and the drive is about thirty minutes in normal conditions.

Hotels against apartments

Apartments win on price and space from three people upwards. Hotels win on certainty, on luggage storage and on having someone to call.

Timing

Two periods sell out and price accordingly: Grand Prix week in September and the New Year period.

For those dates, book early and expect less choice. For everything else, Baku has plenty of rooms and late booking is not punished.

Noise, which nobody asks about

The centre is lively late, and rooms facing a main street reflect that. Ask for a courtyard-facing room if you are a light sleeper.

The Old City is the quietest option after dark by a wide margin. That is one of the better reasons to stay there.

A test that works

Find the address on a map before booking. Measure the walk to the Old City walls and to the boulevard.

If both are under fifteen minutes, the location is fine whatever the listing calls the district. If either is over twenty-five, you are further out than the price probably suggests.

Arranging it

Tell us what matters most: price, quiet, the view, or being able to walk everywhere. Those four rarely point at the same place, and choosing between them is the whole exercise.
