Best months August

August in Baku is defined by its nights. The daytime average is 29.7 °C, slightly below July, but the nightly average of 22.9 °C is the highest of the year.

That one figure explains how the month works. The city does not cool down after dark, so the evening becomes the comfortable part of the day rather than the end of it.

What the numbers say

Figure August July September
Average high 29.7 °C 30.6 °C 25.6 °C
Average low 22.9 °C 22.2 °C 19.4 °C
Rainfall 6 mm 2 mm 15 mm
Rainy days 2 1 2

Those are the long-term averages published by Azerbaijan’s National Hydrometeorological Department.

Two things follow. Rain is not a factor: 6 mm across two days is nothing to plan around. And the difference between August and September is larger at night than by day, which is why the first week of September feels like a different trip.

The wind, which usually helps

Baku is windy, and in August that is mostly a mercy. The same wind that makes January feel colder takes the edge off an August afternoon on the seafront.

It does not make the middle of the day cool. It makes it survivable, and it is the reason the boulevard is still usable when the thermometer says otherwise.

How the day works

Start early. The Old City before ten is pleasant, and by one it is not.

Use the middle of the day for museums, lunch and anything with a roof. This is the month where indoor sights earn their place in the plan.

Come back out after six. The city fills in the evening, the boulevard works, and dinner happens late. Plan the day in two halves and August stops being a problem.

Where people go to escape it

Two directions, both easy from Baku.

North to the coast. The beach strip around Nabran and Khachmaz is where the city goes at weekends, which also means Friday traffic.

Up to the mountains. Gabala sits high enough to be noticeably cooler, and the forests do the rest. The same is true further north around Guba and Shahdag.

If your trip is longer than a few days, splitting it between the city and the mountains is the standard August shape.

Who August suits

People who want warm sea and long evenings. People travelling from the Gulf, where August is hotter still and Azerbaijan reads as a cool country rather than a hot one.

It suits a packed sightseeing itinerary less well. The heat sets the pace, and fighting it does not work.

What to pack

Light clothes, a hat, sun protection, and shoes you can actually walk in. Evenings stay warm, so a jacket is rarely needed in the city.

If the mountains are in the plan, add one warm layer. The temperature difference at height is real, especially after dark.

If you would rather avoid the heat

September is the obvious answer: 25.6 °C by day and cooler nights, with the sea still warm. Our best time to visit page compares the seasons properly.

For the opposite extreme, winter is cheap, quiet and walkable.

Common questions

How hot is Baku in August?

The long-term average is 29.7 °C by day and 22.9 °C at night. The nights are the warmest of the year, warmer even than July's.

Does it rain in August?

Barely. The average is 6 mm across about two rainy days, so rain is not what shapes the month.

Where do people go to escape the heat?

North to the coast around Nabran, or up to Gabala and the mountains, where height does the cooling.

Is the sea warm enough to swim?

August is the warmest stretch of the Caspian season, which is why the northern beaches fill at weekends.

What should I pack?

Light clothes, a hat, sun protection and shoes you can walk in. Evenings stay warm, so a jacket is rarely needed.
