When to Visit Azerbaijan, and What Each Season Costs You

Azerbaijan has a real four-season climate, and the honest answer to when you should come depends on what you intend to do here. Spring and autumn are easy and general. Summer and winter are specific and can be excellent.

Spring, April to early June

The best all-round window. The country is green, the mountains are accessible, and Baku is warm without being difficult.

Late April and May are when the orchards in the north are worth the drive, and when Gobustan can be walked without hunting for shade.

The trade is rain. Spring showers are normal, mountain roads can be affected, and a week here in April is not guaranteed to be a week of sunshine.

Summer, late June to August

Baku is hot and humid, and the sea is right there without doing much to help. What saves the city is the wind, which is constant and takes the edge off.

This is the season to leave the city. Gabala, Guba, Gusar and the high villages are cooler by a serious margin, and the difference is what locals plan their own summers around.

For beach days, Absheron works and is what Baku itself uses. It is functional rather than glamorous.

Autumn, September to October

The other great window, and arguably the best. Heat drops, light softens, the harvest is on, and the country looks its best in the north and west.

September brings the Grand Prix on 24 to 26 September in 2026, which fills Baku’s hotels for that week and raises prices. Either build a trip around it or step around it, because it is not a week you can ignore if you are booking accommodation in the capital.

October is quieter and still warm enough for everything except swimming.

Winter, November to March

Two very different trips live in this season.

The first is skiing. Shahdag and the northern resorts run through the winter, and the road up from Baku becomes a route with a purpose.

The second is a cheap, quiet city break. Baku in January is cold, windy and half empty, hotels are at their lowest prices, and the Old City is yours alone. That is a real proposition for anyone who prefers museums and restaurants to landscapes.

What winter does not suit is a touring trip. Days are short, some mountain roads are difficult, and the drives that make sense in June do not in January.

The wind, which is not seasonal

Baku is windy. The name is popularly explained by it, the trees on the peninsula lean because of it, and the seafront is colder than the thermometer says because of it.

Pack for that in any season. A layer that blocks wind is more useful here than a heavier coat.

Choosing by activity

City and culture: any season, best in spring and autumn, cheapest in winter.

Mountains and hiking: June to September, with May and October as shoulder months.

Skiing: December to March, subject to conditions in any given year.

Road trips and the west: April to June and September to October, both for the roads and for the daylight.

A practical recommendation

If you can choose freely, come in the second half of May or the first half of October. You will get warm days, cool evenings, open mountain roads and none of the extremes.
