None of these mistakes is dramatic. They are small planning errors that cost an hour each, and an hour is a lot when the session has already started.
Every one of them is fixable in five minutes, if you fix it before you fly.
Booking the wrong side of the track
This is the big one. A street circuit divides the city, and crossing it on foot needs an open bridge or underpass.
A hotel that is four hundred metres away in a straight line can be a thirty minute walk on race day. Find your gate on the circuit map first, then book on that side.
Assuming a taxi reaches the gate
It does not. Cars stop at a drop-off perimeter and you walk from there.
Plan the walk as part of the journey rather than as a surprise at the end of it.
Trusting the map for time
Google will happily show a straight line through a closed street. The route you actually walk goes around the closure.
Add half again to any estimate on race days, and walk the route once on a practice day.
Arriving on race day
It is the hardest version of the trip. Everything is new, everything is busy, and you have no margin for a delayed flight.
Arriving a day earlier turns the unknowns into things you have already done once. It is the single highest-value change to any race weekend plan.
No transport card
The metro needs a BakiKart, sold at stations. On a race morning everyone needs one at the same time.
Buy it on arrival day. The card costs very little and the queue costs an hour.
Carrying no cash
Central Baku takes cards almost everywhere. Kiosks, market stalls and some taxis do not.
Carry a small amount in small notes. It is the difference between buying water quickly and having a conversation about change.
Forgetting ear protection
Foam plugs cost almost nothing and take no space. Children need proper defenders rather than plugs.
This is the item people notice they forgot at the exact moment it is too late to fix.
Skipping sunscreen because it is September
An open grandstand has no shade, and an afternoon facing the track is several hours of direct sun. Autumn does not help you.
Flying home the day after the race
In 2026 Baku ran the race on Saturday, so the Sunday was free. Almost no other Grand Prix leaves you a spare day like that. When the organiser publishes the next dates, check which day the race falls on before you book.
Be aware of one date. 27 September is Remembrance Day in Azerbaijan, marking those killed in the 2020 war. It is not on the official list of public holidays, so the city works normally. But it is a day of national mourning, and the mood of it is not festive. In 2026 it fell on that free Sunday.
A flight on the first free day throws it away. In 2026 Monday morning was busier at the airport, and it left the whole of Sunday for the Old City or a day trip.
Walking straight into the exit crowd
Thirty thousand people leave at once. The first fifteen minutes are the worst of the day.
Sit for twenty minutes, or leave a few minutes early. Either works. Joining the middle of it is the one choice that does not.
The five-minute fix list
Find your gate on the circuit map. Book accommodation on that side. Buy a transport card on arrival day. Pack earplugs and sunscreen. If the race leaves a free day, do not fly home on it.
That is most of the difference between a smooth weekend and a tiring one.

Common questions
What is the most common mistake?
Booking a hotel on the wrong side of the circuit. Comfort does not help when the crossing you need is closed.
Do people really underestimate the walk?
Constantly. The map shows a straight line and the closures do not, so ten minutes becomes thirty.
Is arriving on race day a bad idea?
It is the hardest version of the trip. Arriving a day earlier turns every unknown into something you have already done once.
What do people forget to buy?
A transport card, small cash, ear protection and sunscreen. All four are cheap and all four are annoying to source late.
Is a Sunday flight a mistake?
It was in 2026, when the race was on Saturday. A Sunday flight wasted that free day. Monday morning was busier at the airport but left Sunday intact.
What about the walk back at night?
It is fine, and it is crowded. Waiting twenty minutes before you join it is the difference between a stroll and a crush.
One thing to do first?
Find your gate on the circuit map and work out which side of the track it is on. Everything else follows from that.
