Azerbaijan F1: Baku Travel and Logistics Guide

Baku hosted the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Azerbaijan Grand Prix from 24 to 26 September 2026. It was an unusual Saturday race. Practice 1 and Practice 2 took place on Thursday 24 September. Practice 3 and qualifying followed on Friday 25 September, and the race was on Saturday 26 September. When the organiser publishes the next race dates, build the trip around them before deciding on flights, hotel nights and a post-race journey.

A circuit built into Baku

Baku City Circuit is a 6.003 km street circuit. The race runs for 51 laps, covering 306 km. Its long main straight follows the Baku shoreline and creates a slipstreaming zone. By contrast, the tight section through Icheri Sheher passes the Old Town’s ancient city walls. These two sides of the layout shape the day. A waterfront stand visit feels very different from the close urban passages by the old city.

Absheron Stand sits at the end of the main straight, with views of braking from up to 378 km/h into Turn 1. Icheri Sheher Stand is beside the city-gate section around Turns 13 to 15. Select a ticket based on the view you want and the walking route from your hotel. Do not assume every gate is equally easy to reach.

Arriving and moving through the city

Heydar Aliyev Airport (GYD) is about 20 km from central Baku. A booked airport transfer removes the arrival decision, especially if a flight lands late or luggage takes time. The driver can meet you with a name board and wait until you emerge. Aero Express minibuses and city buses are the public transport options. The city bus fare is 0.20 AZN.

On race days there is no venue parking and roads around the circuit close. Taxis and rideshares cannot drive to circuit entrances. Use their designated drop-off points, then keep going on foot. Circuit access is through footbridges and underpasses, so leave time for the final approach. Guests staying near the Old City can often make the last part on foot. But they should still check the route for the gate on their ticket.

Make the fixed parts work first

Treat the ticket, hotel address and arrival time as the fixed parts of the trip. Then allow room for the city to work differently during a street-race weekend. The roads around the circuit close on race days. The most useful plan is one that still works when the final walk is longer than expected. Arrange the journey around your plan
