Two Different Jobs, Often Confused

These two words are frequently used as though they meant the same thing, and the difference between them decides whether certain days work at all.

A driver is responsible for the vehicle, the road and your return, while a guide is responsible for whether you understood the place you just visited.

What a driver gives you

Movement, time and the removal of a hundred small decisions. Our page on travelling with a driver explains why this is the ordinary arrangement outside the city rather than a luxury.

A driver knows the road, the parking, the turnings and the realistic time between two places. He waits while you walk, which is the part that makes a day feel unhurried.

What he does not owe you is commentary, and if he offers some, that is generosity rather than the service you purchased.

What a guide gives you

Meaning, which is the difference between looking at a carved rock and understanding what somebody was recording on it.

At Gobustan, in the walled Old City and in the Sheki palace, a guide changes the day completely. These are places where almost everything interesting is invisible without explanation.

A guide also manages the pace, the tickets and the order you see things in. That is worth more on a crowded morning than it sounds on paper.

When you need only a driver

Scenic days. A drive north into the mountains, a run to the Caspian coast, a day where the point is the landscape and the stops.

Nobody requires a commentary to enjoy a mountain road, so save the money and invest it in a longer day instead.

When the guide is the whole point

History days, museum days and anywhere the story is older than the building. Also any day where you want questions answered as they occur to you.

A good guide is not a recording, because the value sits in the answers to whatever question happens to occur to you.

Mixing the two across a trip

This is what most visitors end up doing, and it is usually right. Take a guide for one or two days, and travel with a driver alone for the rest.

A five day trip rarely requires five days of explanation, although it frequently benefits from two.

The language question

Ask about it early rather than late. Some drivers speak English or Russian well, some speak neither, and it is not something to discover at eight in the morning.

What we will not claim

We will not tell you on this page that a particular guide, a particular language or a particular person is available for your dates. That depends on the date, and we confirm it when you ask rather than promising it in advance.

We also will not tell you that every visitor needs a guide. Plenty of good days here need only a car.

That last phrase is the one that decides the answer. It is worth writing it in the first message rather than the third.
