Ismayilli: The Region Between Shamakhi and Gabala

Ismayilli is a district on the western road, between Shamakhi and Gabala, in the foothills where the plain gives up and the Greater Caucasus begins.

Most visitors drive through it without registering the name. It is worth knowing what is there, because one of the country’s best villages is up a road that leaves from here.

What the landscape is like

Green, folded and gentler than the mountains further north. Orchards, woodland and villages on slopes rather than on flat ground.

It is the transitional country between the dry plain around Baku and the proper mountains. It is also the point on the western drive where the view starts earning attention.

Wine

The area has a wine-making tradition and several producers work here. Azerbaijan’s wine is not widely known abroad and it is genuinely worth trying at source.

The turning for Lahij

This is the practical reason Ismayilli matters to a traveller. The road up to Lahij, the copper-working mountain village, leaves the main western route in this district.

That road is slower than its distance suggests and it climbs. Factor an hour more than you expect in each direction, and check the weather in spring and autumn.

Villages

Several villages in the district have their own character, including settlements with a distinct history of their own.

This is not a place with a checklist. It rewards driving slowly, stopping when something looks interesting, and having a driver who knows which turning is worth taking.

How it fits a route

On the standard western trip, Ismayilli is the middle. Baku to Shamakhi, then Ismayilli and the Lahij detour, then Gabala for the night.

That makes it a stop rather than a stay. If you have four days rather than three, one night in the district lets you do Lahij properly rather than as a morning.

When to go

Late spring through autumn. The foothills need leaves, and the mountain road to Lahij is most reliable in dry months.

Winter is quiet and the road up can be difficult. Not the season to plan a first visit around.

Getting there

By road on the main western route, about halfway between Baku and Gabala. A car is the only sensible way, and a driver who knows the Lahij turning is worth having.

What to buy

Honey, nuts and preserves, from the villages rather than from a roadside stall on the main road. Prices are lower and the quality is better away from the traffic.

If a producer is receiving visitors, wine is the obvious thing to carry home. Pack it properly, because it is glass and the mountain road is not smooth.

Where to eat

Simple roadside places serving what the kitchen made that day. Ask what is ready rather than reading a menu.

This is foothill country and the food follows it: grilled meat, bread, dairy and whatever is in season. It is not sophisticated and it is consistently good.

A practical note on timing

If Lahij is in the plan, treat Ismayilli as the morning rather than the afternoon. The mountain road is better in good light and the village is better before the coaches arrive.
