Nakhchivan Is a Separate Journey

Nakhchivan is the part of Azerbaijan that most visitors never see, and the reason is geographical rather than cultural. It has no land border with the rest of the country.

That single fact determines everything about planning a visit. It is not a long day trip but a separate journey, with its own arrival and its own return.

Getting there

By air from Baku, because there is no direct road from the mainland and a flight is therefore how everybody travels.

How long to stay

Two or three days is the shape that works, because one night is sufficient to see the main city and insufficient to justify the flights.

Why it feels different

The landscape, because where the north of the country is green and wooded, this region is dry, open and mountainous in a considerably starker way.

The architecture is different too. The region has a long tradition of monumental brick tomb towers, and they are the thing most visitors remember.

Who it suits

Second visits, mostly, meaning somebody who has already covered Baku, the north and the west, and wants a region that feels genuinely separate.

It also suits travellers who like quiet. This is not a place with crowds.

When to come

Late spring and early autumn, because the region sits low and dry, and the summer sun is unforgiving in a manner the Caspian coast never is.

Winter narrows things considerably, particularly anything in the mountains. Ask about a specific route rather than assuming it is open.

Practical expectations

Treat it as a region with fewer services than the capital, because that is what it is. Carry cash, do not assume a card works everywhere, and confirm anything time-critical in advance.

The same rule applies to language. Ask us early if you need a particular language on the ground, and we will tell you what is possible for your dates.

What we will not claim

We will not tell you which flights operate in your week, what a hotel costs or which sites are open on your day. Those are exactly the facts that go stale on a website.

We also will not tell you that any specific permission beyond your Azerbaijan entry is or is not required. That is a question for the official portal, and the answer belongs to them.

This is a trip that benefits from being organised rather than improvised. Flights in both directions, a vehicle on the ground and somebody who genuinely knows the roads.
