How Long to Spend in Azerbaijan

The honest answer is three days for the city, five to add the mountains, and seven to ten to see the country properly. Most disappointment with Azerbaijan comes from choosing one of those and then attempting the next one up.

Three days

Enough for Baku, and Baku deserves it. The Old City, the boulevard along the water, the museums, and the food, which is the part most visitors underestimate before arriving and talk about afterwards.

Add one half day outside the city. Gobustan for rock art and mud volcanoes, or Absheron for fire sites and old villages. Both are close enough to leave after breakfast and be back for dinner.

What three days will not give you is the mountains. Every northern destination is at least two hours away, and a day trip that spends five hours in a car is a poor use of a short trip.

Five days

The shape changes. Now you can keep three days for Baku and take two for one region.

North gets you Guba and Gusar, orchard country and the road into the mountains. Further north and higher is Shahdag, which works as an overnight rather than a day trip.

West gets you Gabala or Sheki. Sheki is about 330 kilometres away, which is why it needs a night rather than a day.

Five days is the point where Azerbaijan stops being a city break and starts being a country.

Seven to ten days

This is where the distances stop hurting. You can do Baku, a northern region and a western route without spending consecutive days in a car.

Ganja is about 360 kilometres from Baku, and it opens up Goygol and Naftalan on the same trip. That combination alone is three days once you allow for the driving.

With ten days you can add the far south towards Lankaran. Or go slowly enough that a mountain village becomes a place you stayed rather than a place you photographed.

The mistake everyone makes

Looking at a map of a small country and assuming short drives.

Azerbaijan is compact by area and long by road. Sheki is 330 km away. Ganja is 360. Naftalan is 340. Those are three to four hour drives before stops, and they run in different directions from the capital.

Planning two of them in one day does not work. Planning one per day works well.

How to decide

Start with what you want. If it is a city, three days is right and adding more will feel thin. If it is landscape, five is the minimum and seven is comfortable.

If it is both, be honest about which one you are willing to shorten. The trips that go wrong are the ones that refuse to choose.

A default that works

Three days in Baku, one half day at Gobustan or Absheron, then two days north with a night in Guba or at Shahdag. That is a five and a half day trip that never feels rushed and never repeats itself.

Extend it westward if you have more time, not by adding a fourth day in Baku.

What a day of driving really costs

A three hour drive is not three hours. It is three hours out, three back, and whatever you did in between.

That is why one long trip per day works and two do not. It is also why an overnight in Guba or Sheki buys more than an extra day in Baku ever will.
