Baku Is a Windy City, and It Changes Plans

Baku is a windy city, and residents will tell you so before they tell you anything else. The old name for the place refers to wind, and the city has never argued with it.

For a visitor this is not trivia. The wind decides what the seafront feels like, what you should have packed, and which plans require a second option.

What it actually feels like

Cold air moves faster than still air, so a windy day at ten degrees behaves like a much colder one. In summer the same wind is a relief rather than a problem.

The effect is strongest along the water, and stepping two streets inland makes the temperature appear to change entirely.

Pack for wind, not only for cold

This is the single most useful thing on this page. A thin windproof shell beats a thick jumper that lets everything through.

The same principle applies to hats, because something that stays on your head is worth considerably more than something that looks correct.

The seafront is the exposed part

The boulevard along the Caspian is beautiful and completely open. On a windy afternoon it is the least comfortable place in the city.

Walk it when the air is calmer, usually earlier in the day, and reserve the Old City and the covered streets for the windier hours.

Water plans need a morning decision

Anything on the water depends on conditions on the day. We will not promise a boat trip weeks ahead, and neither should anybody else.

Treat it as a plan with an alternative attached, because a windy morning then changes the day instead of ruining it.

What it does to photographs

Mostly good things. Wind clears haze, sharpens the light and makes the sea worth looking at.

Dust on the drier days

On some days the wind carries dust, particularly outside the city and around the drier ground to the south. It is an occasional nuisance rather than a constant one.

If you wear contact lenses, keep glasses in your bag, because it is a small preparation that repays itself immediately.

Is it a reason not to come?

No, although it is certainly a reason to bring the correct jacket and to keep one indoor option in reserve.

Nobody here treats the wind as an obstacle. It is simply part of what the city is, and visitors who dress for it stop noticing it after a day.
