What a Spring Trip Here Looks Like

Spring is one of the two seasons here that ask nothing of you. The other is autumn, and between them they cover most of what makes a trip comfortable.

The city becomes walkable again, the regions turn green, and the heat that shapes a July day remains several weeks away.

What actually changes

The mountains return, because roads that were snow-bound become ordinary drives, and the villages above Guba and Ismayilli reappear on the map of possible days.

The colour changes too. The hills between Shamakhi and Ismayilli are green in spring in a way they simply are not in August.

The weather is honest but changeable

Spring here never settles, because a warm morning can become a cold, windy afternoon while the mountains behave completely differently from the city.

Dress in layers rather than for a forecast, because that single habit resolves the majority of spring days.

We will not predict conditions for your week, because nobody can do that honestly two months out. What we can do is tell you which routes cope badly with rain.

The holiday inside the season

Novruz is a five-day public holiday, set out in the Labour Code and listed on the official holidays page. It falls in the second half of March, and the exact days are announced each year.

For a traveller this matters. Many businesses close, families travel to their home regions, and the roads out of the city fill up.

The days get long again

Spring is when a regional day stops feeling cramped, because a journey to Sheki or Lahij fits comfortably when the light continues into the evening.

The wind is a spring feature

Baku is windy, and spring is not an exception to that. A calm morning on the boulevard is not a promise about the afternoon.

Where spring is at its best

The band of country between Shamakhi, Ismayilli and Gabala, where the foothills are green and the drives are short. The northern route towards Guba and Khinalug once the higher roads are open.

And the city itself, which is at its most pleasant when you can walk all day without planning around the heat.

What to be careful about

Higher mountain roads reopen at different times in different years. We will not tell you in advance that a particular road is clear in your week.

Ask about the specific route close to your date, because that is an answer worth having accurate rather than early.

Send the dates, the number of travellers and whether the mountains are the point of the trip. If your dates touch the holiday period, say so.
