If Your Passport Goes Missing Here

A passport goes missing in one of two ways here. Either it is genuinely lost, usually in transit or at a hotel, or it is taken.

The practical answer is the same in both cases. Only your own country can replace it, and everything else in the day is arranged around that one fact.

Start with your own embassy or consulate

This is the first call, not the second. Your mission decides what it needs, how long it takes and whether an emergency travel document is available to you.

Some countries have an embassy in Baku. Others cover Azerbaijan from a neighbouring capital, which changes the shape of the week considerably.

Find out which one applies to your nationality before you travel. It takes five minutes at home and it is very slow to discover on the day.

Do not wait for us to tell you the rule

We will not print a procedure here. Consular requirements differ by country, they change, and a wrong instruction on a page like this costs somebody a flight.

What your mission asks for is what counts. Ask them directly, write the answer down, and work from that rather than from anything you read online.

The police report question

Many missions ask for a report from the local police. Some do not. Ask your embassy which camp it is in before you spend an afternoon on it.

If a report is needed, the hotel where you were staying is usually the easiest place to start. Staff there deal with the local process more often than you do.

Assume the flight will move

This is the part travellers resist. A replacement document takes as long as it takes, and your original departure is not a deadline the process respects.

Tell the airline early rather than late. Then treat the new departure date as the thing you are planning around.

What we can actually do

We can hold or rebook a car, extend a room, change a route and get you back to Baku from a region. That is useful and it is genuine.

We cannot speak to your embassy for you, and we will not claim a relationship with any mission. Anyone who tells you they can accelerate a consular process is selling you something.

Getting back to the capital

If this happens in Sheki, Gabala or anywhere else outside Baku, the first practical move is the drive back. Missions are in the capital and the appointments happen there.

Send us your location and the number of people travelling. A car on the same day is usually possible, and it is one less thing to organise from a hotel lobby.

The preparation that actually helps

Photograph the identity page of your passport before you leave home. Keep the image somewhere you can open without the passport itself, and give a copy to someone at home.

None of this prevents a loss. It shortens every conversation that follows one.

Money and cards

A stolen bag rarely contains only a passport. Cancel cards immediately, and keep one card and a small amount of cash somewhere separate from the rest.

This is dull advice and it is the advice that works. Travellers who split their money across two places recover from a bad afternoon much faster.
