Landing in Baku After Midnight

Flights reach Baku through the night, and a late landing is an ordinary way to arrive. The drive into the city takes about thirty minutes in normal conditions, and after midnight the roads are quiet.

The difficulty of a night arrival is never the distance, but the list of services that are closed and the decisions you postponed until exhaustion set in.

The drive is the easy half

Your flight lands, you clear the arrivals process, and the city is half an hour away. That part behaves the same at two in the morning as at two in the afternoon.

Everything around it behaves differently, because the reception desk has one person on it and the counter you intended to use has a shutter down.

Arrange the car before you fly

A booked car is worth more at night than at any other hour. You are tired, the signage is in a language you may not read, and your judgement about a fair price is at its worst.

A driver holding your flight number is already monitoring it, so a delay of ninety minutes becomes his problem rather than yours.

Send the flight number, the date, the number of passengers and the address you are going to. That is all we need to quote the run.

Tell the hotel when you actually land

This single message prevents most night arrival disasters. Give the hotel your flight number and the local landing time, and ask them to reply in writing.

A property expecting a guest at three will hold the room, while a property that knows nothing may release it. Never assume that a booking confirmation and a staffed reception desk are equivalent.

Assume nothing is open

Exchange desks, mobile shops and pharmacies in the terminal all keep their own hours. We will not tell you which of them serves your particular night, because that changes and we cannot verify it for your date.

Plan so that it becomes irrelevant, arriving with enough money to reach the hotel, a charged telephone and any medication you require before morning.

The local number, the cash and the shopping can all wait until the following day. None of them is worth standing in an empty hall for.

Give your first morning away

The most common mistake is booking an eight o’clock start after a four o’clock check-in. The day that follows is spent looking at your watch rather than at the city.

Treat the first morning as recovery and the afternoon as the genuine beginning, because a city walk starting after lunch costs you almost nothing.

If your dates are tight, tell us. We would rather rearrange the plan than watch you spend day one exhausted.

When the flight runs late

Delays at night are common and they are manageable. As soon as you have a new landing time, send it to the driver and to the hotel.

Both can absorb a change they are informed about, and neither can absorb one discovered at the door.

Arriving late with children

The difficulty is rarely the hour itself, but the luggage, the child seats and the distance between the terminal door and a bed.

Tell us the ages of the children when you ask about the car. A seat is not a thing to improvise in an arrivals hall at two in the morning.
