Azerbaijan e-visa mistakes that cost people the trip

Most e-visa trouble is not a refusal. It is a traveller holding an approval that does not match the passport in their hand. Or an application filed three days before a flight, on the assumption that three working days means three days.

Both are avoidable at home in about ten minutes. Below are the errors that actually cost people the trip, in the order they tend to happen.

Where these facts come from

Every figure on this page comes from our Azerbaijan e-visa guide. That page cites the official government portal at evisa.gov.az and was last checked against it on 12 August 2026.

We publish nothing here that we cannot point at a source for. In particular, we do not reproduce the list of eligible nationalities anywhere on this site. Two reachable sources disagree about it, and a wrong list is worse than none. The approved list lives on the portal itself, and that is where to read it.

Applications go on the government portal directly. Many other sites resell the same application with a markup and some of them look official.

The mistakes, in the order they happen

1. Applying on one passport and travelling on another

This is the rule that quietly turns a valid visa into nothing.

If you hold dual or multiple citizenship, apply on the passport you will actually travel on. When the document at the border differs from the one used in the application, the e-visa is treated as invalid. It looks perfectly correct in your inbox and fails at the desk.

Compare the passport number on the approved visa with the number in the passport in your bag. Do that at home rather than at check-in.

2. Reading three working days as three days

The standard e-visa is issued within three working days at a state fee of USD 20.

Working days are not calendar days. An application submitted on a Thursday can sit over a weekend, and people discover that on the Friday with a Monday flight booked. Count the working days between today and your departure before you decide which option you need.

3. Not knowing the urgent option exists

The urgent e-visa is issued within three hours and costs USD 60.

This is the fact that changes what counts as too late. A trip decided on a Thursday is still possible, and we have watched people abandon plans they could have kept. The fee is three times the standard one, so it is a rescue rather than a default.

4. Paying a reseller several times the fee

The state fee is USD 20 for the standard visa and USD 60 for the urgent one.

A price well above those is somebody’s service charge, not the visa. Some reseller sites are presented convincingly and rank well in search results. Look at the address bar and go to the official portal instead.

5. Counting the 30 days from the wrong date

The e-visa allows a stay of up to 30 days, counted from entry.

It is not a paperwork window that starts when the approval arrives. Plan the trip inside the stay itself, and count the day you land as day one. People who get this wrong lose the end of the trip rather than the beginning.

6. Planning the trip before checking the route is open

The e-visa is issued to citizens of the countries approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and to stateless people living permanently in those countries.

If your nationality is not on that list, this route is not open and the application goes through an embassy instead. Check the list on the portal before you book flights, because it is the one question that no amount of planning afterwards can answer.

7. Keeping the visa only in an email

An approval that lives in a single email, on a phone with a flat battery, in a terminal with no signal, is not really in your possession.

8. Treating the visa as a guaranteed entry

A visa is permission to travel. The officer at the border still decides on entry, and looks at the passport, the visa and the purpose of the trip.

Keep your accommodation booking and your return ticket within reach. Not because you will always be asked, but because hunting for them in a queue is an unpleasant way to start a holiday.

Before you book anything

Two checks remove most of the trouble. Confirm your nationality is on the approved list, and confirm which passport you will carry.
