Two Days North of Baku: A Route That Works

Two days is the shortest useful northern trip, and it is a good one. The route runs from dry plain to orchard country to high mountains within a few hours of driving. That is more variety than most countries manage in a week.

Here is the shape of it, with distances from our own route data.

Day one, morning: the road out

Leave Baku early. The first stretch is flat and unremarkable, and it passes quickly.

Stop at the Candy Cane hills near Khizi. Thirty to sixty minutes, and better in morning light than in the middle of the day. This is the point where the landscape starts to be worth looking at.

Day one, afternoon: Guba

Guba is about 170 kilometres from Baku, which our transfer data puts at roughly two and a half hours of driving before stops.

Arrive for lunch. Walk the town, cross to Krasnaya Sloboda in the afternoon, and see the bazaar if it is still open.

If it is late summer or autumn, the orchards are the point. Stop for fruit on the way in, from a roadside stall rather than a shop.

Night one

Guba is the practical base and has enough accommodation for a night.

Shahdag, further up at about 212 kilometres from Baku, is the comfortable alternative. It is a resort rather than a town, and it makes sense if you want a hotel standard and a mountain morning.

Either works. Guba keeps day two shorter, Shahdag starts it higher.

Day two: the mountain road

The road up to Khinalug is the reason to spend a second day here rather than driving back. Khinalug sits at about 230 kilometres from Baku, high in the mountains beyond Guba.

The distance is not the difficulty. The climb is, and it takes longer than the number suggests. Ask about the vehicle before you commit, because this is the section that decides what you need.

Allow most of the day. The village is small and the road is the experience.

Day two, alternative

If the mountain road does not appeal, or the weather is against it, spend day two in Gusar and the country north of it.

It is gentler, greener and easier. Gusar sits at about 185 kilometres from Baku and is the last real town before the mountains.

Getting back

The return to Baku is the same road and takes the same time. Leave enough of the afternoon for it, and do not schedule a flight for that evening.

What this route gives you

Three landscapes in two days: plain, orchard country, high mountains. A working town rather than a resort. One genuinely remote place.

It is the best short trip out of Baku, and it is the one we would build first for anyone with two spare days.

What to pack for two days

Layers. The temperature difference between Baku and the mountain villages is significant, and it arrives faster than you expect.

Cash in small notes, because card acceptance thins out north of Guba. Water and something to eat, since the mountain road has few places to stop.

Shoes you can walk in. Nothing about this route is a hike, and all of it involves standing on uneven ground.

Extending it to three days

A third day turns this from a good trip into an excellent one. Add Shahdag properly rather than passing through it, or slow the Khinalug day down and stay a night up there.

The third day is also the insurance. Mountain weather changes plans, and a spare day means a change rather than a loss.
