Guba: What the Northern Town Is Actually Like

Guba sits about 170 kilometres north of Baku, at the point where the flat coastal plain gives up and the mountains begin. Our transfer data puts the drive at roughly two and a half hours.

It is the closest of the northern towns, which is why it works as a day trip when Gabala and Shahdag do not.

What the town is like

Guba is a working town rather than a resort. There is a river, a bazaar, tree-lined streets and a rhythm that belongs to the people who live there rather than to visitors.

That is the appeal for some people and the disappointment for others. If you want polished attractions in a row, this is not the trip. If you want to see a northern Azerbaijani town going about its business, it is exactly right.

Krasnaya Sloboda

Across the river sits a settlement that has long been home to a Mountain Jewish community. It is one of the few places of its kind anywhere, and it is a short walk from the centre of Guba.

Go quietly and respectfully, as you would anywhere people live rather than perform. There are synagogues, houses built with real ambition, and a cemetery that tells you how long this has been here.

Apples and orchards

This is orchard country. Apples above all, and the region’s name appears on fruit sold across the country.

Late summer and autumn are the seasons when that is visible rather than theoretical. Roadside stalls, full trees and produce that has not travelled to reach you.

The road up to Khinalug

Guba is the usual base for the road into the mountains towards Khinalug, one of the highest continuously inhabited villages in the Caucasus.

That road is a separate undertaking. It is long, it climbs hard, and it needs a suitable vehicle and a driver who knows it. Treat it as its own half day rather than an add-on to an afternoon in town.

Guba or Gabala?

They are different products. Gabala is greener, softer and built around resort activity, with cable cars, lakes and hotels.

Guba is drier, plainer and closer to Baku, with the mountains standing behind it rather than around it. Gabala is the easier sell. Guba is the more ordinary place, in the good sense of that word.

Distance is the honest tiebreaker. Guba is roughly 170 km from Baku and Gabala roughly 225 km, and on a day trip that difference is an hour of your life in each direction.

When to go

Late spring to autumn. The orchards need leaves to be worth seeing, and the mountain road behind the town is more reliable in dry months.

Winter turns Guba into a staging post for the ski resort further up rather than a destination in itself.

Getting there

By road. There is no useful rail option for a day trip, and the drive is straightforward on a main route north.

A car with a driver is the normal arrangement, especially if you want the mountain road as well. Tell us at the time of booking whether Khinalug is part of the plan, because it changes the vehicle.
