Sheki or Gabala: Which One Should You Do?

Both are west of Baku, both need at least one night, and visitors regularly assume they are interchangeable. They are not.

Sheki is a historic town. Gabala is a region built around landscape and resorts. Choosing between them is a question about what you want from a couple of days, not about which is better.

The distances

Gabala is about 225 kilometres from Baku. Sheki is about 330. Both figures come from our own route data.

That hundred kilometre difference decides more than it looks. Gabala is a long day trip if you insist. Sheki is not, under any circumstances.

What Sheki is

A town with a serious architectural inheritance. The khan’s palace, with its stained glass and painted interiors, is the piece everyone comes for, and it deserves the reputation.

There is also a caravanserai, a craft tradition that is still working rather than performed, and a local food identity distinct enough to be worth planning meals around.

Sheki asks you to walk, look and eat slowly. It gives back accordingly.

What Gabala is

A region rather than a town. Forested foothills, lakes, cable cars up into the mountains, and hotels built for people who came to be outside.

It is greener and softer than most of the country, and it is where a lot of Baku goes in summer to escape the heat.

Gabala asks you to do things. Walking, cable cars, lakes, activities for children.

Choosing between them

Take Sheki if you like architecture, craft and food, and if you are happy for a trip to consist of looking at things properly.

Take Gabala if you want landscape, activity, or a base for a family. Take it also if your time is short, because the drive is meaningfully easier.

Doing both

They sit roughly a hundred kilometres apart, which makes the pairing natural. The standard route is Baku to Gabala, a night, then on to Sheki, another night, then back.

Three days minimum. Four is comfortable and lets you add Lahij, the copper-working mountain village, which sits between the two.

This is the best three-day trip out of Baku, and it is what we would recommend to anyone with the time for it.

When to go

Spring and autumn for both. Gabala works in summer as an escape from the heat, and in winter as a ski destination in its own right.

Sheki in winter is quiet and cold, and the palace interiors are just as good. If you do not mind short days, it is a genuinely underrated season there.

Getting there

By road, in both cases. A car with a driver is the normal arrangement, and for a two-town route it also solves the problem of moving luggage between hotels.

Public transport connects both to Baku but not to each other conveniently, which is what makes the loop awkward without a car.

What each one costs in driving

Baku to Gabala is roughly three and a half hours. Baku to Sheki is closer to five.

On a two-night trip, that difference is most of an afternoon. It is the single strongest argument for Gabala when time is short, and it is the reason Sheki is better as part of a longer loop.

Where to sleep

Gabala has the wider range, from resort hotels to small guest houses, because the region was built for visitors.

Sheki has fewer options and some of them are memorable, including accommodation in restored historic buildings. Book earlier there than you would in Gabala.
