What Azerbaijan Is Like in Autumn

Autumn is the season this country is easiest to travel in. The heat leaves the middle of the day, the roads north and west are still open, and the light gets better every week.

It is also the season with the most variation inside it. September and November are barely the same trip.

What changes after summer

Walking in Baku becomes pleasant again. In August the heat decides your day, and in October it stops having an opinion.

The crowds thin out after the summer peak. Restaurants have tables, the Old City has space, and the boulevard stops feeling like a queue.

Daylight shortens week by week. That is the part people forget, and it matters more than the temperature for anything outside the city.

September

September still behaves like late summer. It is warm, the coast still feels like the coast, and the city is busy.

One date reshapes it. The Formula 1 weekend lands in this month, fills the city and lifts prices around it.

If your dates are flexible, either aim at that weekend deliberately or stay well clear of it. The middle position is the expensive one.

October

This is the month the mountains earn. The northern valleys and the western hills turn colour, the roads are still reliable, and the days are still long enough for a proper trip out.

The city is at its best too. Warm enough to sit outside in the evening, cool enough to walk all day.

If somebody asks us for one month, this is usually the answer.

November

The tipping month. Rain becomes more likely, the higher roads become weather-dependent, and the light goes early.

The city is still good. It is the country beyond it that needs a second plan by now.

Book November with flexibility in the itinerary rather than a fixed chain of mountain days.

Where autumn works best

The north, around Guba and Gusar and the road up to Khinalug, for colour and height.

The west, around Sheki, Gabala and Ismayilli, for a two or three day loop that does not depend on perfect weather.

The south, around Lankaran and Lerik, which is green when the rest of the country has dried out.

What autumn is not good for

Beach days late in the season. Guaranteed weather at any point. Long mountain days in November without a fallback.

If your trip is built entirely around one high mountain road, autumn is the wrong season to make it non-negotiable.

What to pack

Layers rather than one heavy coat. A jacket that stops wind and rain does more work here than a warm one.

Shoes with grip. The stone of the Old City is polished, and wet stone is the most common way to have a bad afternoon.

Plan around the short day

A route that worked in June needs an earlier start in October. Leaving at nine and coming back after dark is a different day.

The simple fix is one stop fewer, not a faster driver. Tell us the month when you ask and we will plan for the daylight you actually get.

The city in autumn

Museums, the Old City and long meals. The boulevard without the summer heat, which is when it is at its best.

This is also the season when a day trip and a city day sit comfortably in the same week. In summer you choose; in autumn you do not have to.
