Coming Here for the Pomegranate Harvest

Every food page on this site is about a dish, a restaurant or a tea house. None of them is about the thing the country actually grows, and in autumn that is the whole story.

For about two months, the fruit is everywhere. On stalls, in crates by the road, pressed into a glass, cooked into a sauce and stacked outside shops that sell nothing else.

The fruit the country claims

The pomegranate turns up here in more places than the fruit bowl. It appears in ornament, in food, on labels and in the way people talk about the autumn.

You do not have to care about any of that to enjoy the season. It is simply the reason the fruit is treated as an event rather than as produce.

When the season is

Autumn. It arrives as the weather turns and it runs into the cold, and the exact weeks depend on the year, the district and the altitude.

We do not print a start date, because there is not one to print. If your dates are anywhere in autumn, you are near it. Tell us the week and we will say what is likely to be out by then.

Goychay

Goychay is the district the country associates with the fruit. Its name is printed on crates sold hundreds of kilometres away, in the way a wine region’s name travels.

It sits on the western road out of the capital, the same direction as Ganja. That matters for planning, because it is a stop on a longer day rather than a destination on its own.

The festival, which we will not date

There is an annual pomegranate festival in autumn. It is a real event with real crowds, and it is one of the few times a year a small town fills with visitors.

What a roadside stall is in this season

In autumn the stalls change character. Instead of a few boxes there are walls of fruit, crates stacked to head height and a press running all day.

The juice, and the warning

Juice is pressed in front of you and handed over still warm from the machine. It is sharper than anything sold in a bottle abroad, and it does not taste like it either.

Wear nothing pale. The stain is permanent, it finds shirts, seats and bags, and no amount of care has ever prevented it. This is the single most useful sentence on the page.

Narsharab

Narsharab is pomegranate juice cooked down into a thick, sour sauce. It goes with fish above all, and with grilled meat almost as well.

It is also the easiest thing to carry home, since a sealed bottle survives a suitcase better than fruit does. Wrap it anyway, because a broken one ruins everything it is packed with.

At the table

Seeds appear on things here in a way that is not decoration. They go into salads, over meat and alongside sour flavours that are already central to the cooking.

Orchards, and why we promise none

An orchard visit can be arranged and it is worth the hour. What we will not do is promise you one on a page, because an orchard is somebody’s working farm and not a venue with opening times.

Ask us with your dates. We will find out what is possible that week, and we will tell you plainly if the answer is nothing. That is a better outcome than a confident line here and a locked gate on the day.

What goes home with you

Sauce, dried fruit, tea and nuts travel well. Fresh fruit and a border are a customs question, and we do not answer customs questions on this site.

This is not a trip on its own. It is a good reason to go west, and it fits a day that includes something else on the same road.

We will drive to Ganja on request, and the fruit country lies along that direction. Tell us how long you have and we will tell you whether it is a day, a long day or an overnight.
