| Best months | October |
October is the month the weather turns from summer to autumn in earnest. Days average 19.6 °C, nights 13.6 °C, and the number of rainy days triples compared with September.
It is also one of the busiest months on the official events calendar. In 2026 the Tourism Board listed something on almost every weekend.
What the numbers say
| Figure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 25.6 °C | 19.6 °C | 13.5 °C |
| Average low | 19.4 °C | 13.6 °C | 8.8 °C |
| Rainfall | 15 mm | 25 mm | 30 mm |
| Rainy days | 2 | 6 | 6 |
These are long-term averages from Azerbaijan’s National Hydrometeorological Department, published on the World Meteorological Organization city page. That page does not name the years the averages cover.
The day loses 6 °C against September, and the night loses almost as much. That is a big change in one month, and it explains why early and late October feel like two different trips.
Rain is the other shift. Two rainy days in September become six in October. That is still less than one a week, but it is enough to need a plan B.
What October held in 2026
The Tourism Board publishes a seasonal list of major events. For October 2026 it named these.
- 4 to 11 October: the Baku World Senior Judo Championships.
- 3 to 4 and 10 to 11 October: GastroFest in the Old City, in front of the Double Gates, with local chefs and live music.
- 1 to 30 October: Harvest Season in Gabala, with more than 20 local restaurants, orchards, farmers and the Gabala market taking part.
- 13 and 20 October: Sabah FC at home in the UEFA Champions League, against Slavia Prague and then Borussia Dortmund.
- 17 to 18 October: the World Sumo Championship at Baku Sports Palace, the first in the region.
- 28 October to 8 November: the Baku International Arts Festival, with more than 20 events in music, theatre and dance.
- 30 October to 1 November: Fly to Baku Art Weekends, with exhibitions and talks across the city.
These are 2026 dates. The 2027 programme had not been published when we checked on 15 October 2026. Check the Tourism Board’s events pages nearer the time, and read this list as a picture of what October tends to hold, not as next year’s schedule.
If music is part of the plan, our page on live music in Azerbaijan covers the kinds of concerts the city offers.
18 October, a holiday that is not a day off
On 18 October 1991, the Supreme Council adopted the Constitutional Act on state independence. The date is now the Day of Restoration of Independence.
It is on the Labour Code’s list of holidays, but not on its list of days off. Offices, banks and shops work as normal, so it does not change a travel plan the way Novruz does.
The harvest month
The Tourism Board describes autumn as the grape harvest, and names the vineyards of Gabala, Ismayilli, Shamakhi and Goygol. It also says visitors may be invited to help pick.
Gabala’s month-long Harvest Season in 2026 put that into a programme. Our page on Azerbaijani wine explains where the vineyards are, and our Gabala guide covers the town itself.
Pomegranates are part of the same autumn, though the exact weeks move with the year and the district. Our pomegranate page covers what to look for and where.
The clocks go back in Europe
Azerbaijan stopped changing its clocks in 2016, according to the Tourism Board. Europe returns to winter time on the last Sunday of October.
In 2026 that is 25 October, and in 2027 it is 31 October. After that Sunday, Baku is four hours ahead of London instead of three. If you fly that weekend, check your connection times in local time.
How an October day works
Early October still allows lunch outside. By the end of the month, evenings near 13 °C call for a jacket and an indoor dinner.
Keep the outdoor part of the day for the afternoon, when the sun is warmest. Use the rainy days for museums, the arts festival or a long lunch.
For trips outside the city, give each day a fallback. With six rainy days in the month, the odds of one landing on your mountain day are real.
What to pack for October
A light jacket for early in the month and a warmer one for the end. Make it windproof and rainproof, since October brings both.
Add shoes with grip. Wet stone in the Old City is slippery, and October is the first month since spring when that matters.
Before you book
