The Last Day, the Bags and the Flight Home

The last day has a shape that most of a trip does not. It is decided by one number, and that number is your flight time.

Everything else on this page is calculated backwards from it. The bags, the checkout, the last meal and the drive all fit into the space that number leaves.

Checkout is not departure

Checkout and departure are two different times, and the gap between them is what catches visitors unprepared. A flight in the evening can leave you with most of a day and nowhere to put a suitcase.

Ask your hotel what time checkout is and whether a bag can wait there afterwards. That single question converts an awkward afternoon into an ordinary one.

What actually fits in the car

A sedan takes one suitcase. A minivan takes three or four. That is the honest capacity of the vehicles, and it is worth establishing before the morning you leave.

So tell us how many bags you have, not how many people. Four people with four large cases are not a sedan booking, and discovering that on the pavement is an unpleasant way to begin a journey.

Late flights

Many departures from here are scheduled late in the evening or overnight. We drive at night, and night costs the same as day with us, so a late flight does not have to become an expensive one.

Arriving at night is the other half of this, and it is the more difficult half. Leaving late is mostly a question of what you do with the hours before it.

If the last night is out of the city

A final night in the mountains is an appealing idea, and it costs you the entire final day. The drive back becomes the plan, and the plan has no slack in it.

If your flight is early, come back to the city the evening before. If it is late, the regional night can work, and we will say honestly which one your dates are.

Use the last morning properly

A final morning is generally enough for one activity done properly. A market, a long breakfast, or one walk you did not fit in earlier.

The markets are the usual destination, and they are also where the last of your cash tends to go. Buy the heavy things earlier in the trip, not on the last morning.

Before you close the door

Chargers in the wall, the passport in the room safe, and something left in the fridge. Those three account for most of what visitors accidentally leave behind.

What we need from you

Three things settle the airport run: the flight number, the pickup address and the number of bags. With those we can put the right vehicle outside the right door.

Send them when you book rather than on the last evening. Nothing about your luggage or your departure time is unexpected by then.

If the plan moves

Flights move, and a plan that cannot move with them is not much of a plan. Tell us as soon as you know, because a change is far easier the day before than the hour before.

The short version

Work backwards from the flight. Ask about checkout, count the bags, keep the last morning simple, and send us the flight number early.

Do that and the final day stops being the day when everything is rushed. It becomes one more ordinary day that happens to end at an airport.
