Baku, Guba and Shahdag: how the northern winter route fits together

Azerbaijan puts a capital city, an orchard valley and a mountain snowfield on one road. The whole thing is shorter than many people’s drive to a ski weekend at home.

The road runs north from Baku. Guba comes first, then Gusar, then the climb to Shahdag. You can treat it as three separate trips or as one continuous one, and the second is almost always the better holiday.

The three places, and what each is for

Baku is the arrival and the contrast. A winter city with a seafront, a walled old quarter and restaurants that are easy to get a table in. It is where the trip starts and, on the way home, where you have a last evening that is not in ski clothes.

Guba is the halfway point that deserves more than a fuel stop. It sits in orchard country about 170 km from Baku, and in winter it is quiet, snow-dusted and genuinely pretty. Khinalug, the high village, is reached from here.

Shahdag is the snow. The resort publishes the distance from Baku as 212 km, and our route data allows about three hours and twenty minutes for the drive. It is the reason most people do this route between December and April.

The Shahdag distance is the resort’s own published figure. The others are our route data for the same corridor, and the drive times allow for the mountain section rather than assuming an open highway the whole way.

How to split the days

Three nights is the shape that works, and four is better if you have them.

Go north on the first day and give the mountains your nights. Snow days are weather days: having two of them means one can be poor without costing you the trip. Come back down through Guba with the afternoon free, and keep the last night in Baku so the flight home is a short drive rather than a long one.

The alternative is to base yourself in Baku and drive up for a single day. That works, and it is a lot of road for a short time on the snow. Close to seven hours of it, there and back.

What makes this a winter trip specifically

The mountains obviously. But the reason the route works is that the city is at its most comfortable in the same months.

Baku in winter is quiet in a way it simply is not in summer. Restaurants take a booking the same evening. The Old City walls are yours to walk. Hotel rates outside the New Year fortnight are the lowest of the year, and the whole northern corridor is cheaper at the same time.

New Year is the exception and worth knowing about in advance. The city fills, prices rise and late booking is expensive. If your dates are flexible, the two weeks either side give you the same city for less.

The season, honestly

Roughly December to April.

The resort decides its own opening and closing from the snow it actually gets, so those months are a planning window rather than a promise. Check the resort’s own channels close to your dates for lift status and current operations. We would rather point you at them than tell you what the snow will be doing in eleven weeks.

Airport to Baku, Baku to Shahdag, a stop at Guba on the way through, and back for the flight. The mountain stretch above Gusar is the part where the car and the timing matter. It is not something to improvise with skis and a hire car on a road you have not driven.
