Shahdag Ski Resort: Getting There, Hotels and a Winter Weekend

Shahdag Mountain Resort is Azerbaijan’s main ski area. It sits in the Greater Caucasus, above the town of Gusar, 212 km from Baku by the resort’s own figure. This page covers the practical side: how to get there, where to sleep, lessons, safety and a weekend plan.

Every fact below comes from the resort’s own website, which we read on 28 September 2026. We link each page, so you can check it again before you travel. We do not show prices here. The resort publishes its own, and they change by season.

Lifts and snow guns: the resort gives three sets of numbers

We cannot give you one lift count, because the resort gives three.

• The About page lists 20 lifts: 3 gondolas, 10 chairlifts, 2 platter lifts and 5 magic carpets. It also lists 532 snow guns.
• The pedestrian lifts page says 17 lifts, of five types.
• The December 2025 news item says 15 lift lines, 600 snow generators and 6 conveyor lifts for beginners.

The pages may count in different ways, or some may be older. For planning, it makes little difference. What matters is which lifts run on your day, and the resort shows that in season.

The same news item listed plans for the rest of that winter. They were 2 new lift bases, 76 more snow generators and 7,070 m of new slopes. It also said a FIS stadium with 500 seats had been built, for ski races.

When is the season?

The resort has not announced the 2026/27 season yet. On 28 September 2026, its activity page listed skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing as “opening soon”.

Last winter, the official opening was marked with a media tour on 18 and 19 December 2025. That is one past date, not a promise for this year. We will check the resort again before 1 November 2026 and update this page.

Most people plan for December to March. Check the opening date before you book flights around skiing.

Getting there from Baku

By bus. Buses to Gusar leave the second floor of Baku International Bus Terminal every half hour, from 07:00 to 18:00. The last stop is Gusar Central Bus Station. From there, the resort says to take a taxi up to Shahdag. It also notes the new Laza highway from Gusar.

Coming back. Buses leave Gusar for Baku every half hour, from 07:00 to 17:30. This is the time to plan your last day around.

By private car. A car door to door takes about 3 hours 20 minutes from Baku, by our estimate. The last part climbs above Gusar, and winter weather sets the pace there. We run this route from Baku to Shahdag and from the airport to Shahdag. A car also takes your skis without a change in Gusar.

Where to stay on the mountain

The resort lists six hotels on its accommodation page. These are their own figures.

Shahdag Hotel & Spa has two room counts because the resort’s pages differ. Its own page says 172 rooms, and the accommodation page says 173.

For a family that wants to cook, Gaya Residences has kitchens. For ski lessons without a walk, Zirve and Shahdag Hotel & Spa have a school in the building. Tell us who is in your group, and we will suggest where to look.

Lessons, children and bad-weather days

The resort’s ski schools work from 09:00 to 17:00. Lessons can be booked online, for skiing or snowboarding. There are individual and group lessons, for adults and children.

Zirve and Shahdag Hotel & Spa also have a kids club, which the resort calls a kindergarten. That helps when a small child is too tired for a second lesson.

If the weather closes the slopes, there is an indoor ski simulator. It is open from 09:00 to 21:00, and the last ticket is at 20:00. It takes up to 4 people at a time.

For the other activities, tickets are sold from 09:30 to 17:30. The activities run from 09:30 to 17:45. Not everyone in the family has to ski. Our page on snow in Azerbaijan covers the ways to enjoy the snow without skis.

Safety and medical help

The resort says there is a rescue service on all slopes. The OKI Shahdag clinic is on site. It offers first aid and checks for injuries. If a patient needs more care, the clinic can arrange a transfer to OKI Hospital in Qusar.

Two simple steps help. Keep the resort’s contact page saved on your phone. And make sure travel insurance covers winter sports.

A two-day weekend plan

This is a suggestion, built only on the times above. Adjust it to your group.

Day	Plan
Friday	Leave Baku by bus or private car. Take a taxi from Gusar if you came by bus. Check in and collect ski equipment.
Saturday	A morning lesson at the ski school, from 09:00. Free skiing or other activities after lunch.
Sunday	A short morning on the slopes. Then leave for Gusar in time for a bus before 17:30, or meet your car.

By bus, the Friday start matters. The last bus to Gusar leaves Baku at 18:00, and you still need a taxi at the other end. An early afternoon bus gives you light for the last part.

By car, leave Baku around midday so the mountain part is in daylight. On Sunday, the car waits for you, so the last bus time does not apply. We still plan the drive down before dark.

A weekend is enough for a first try at skiing. For a family learning together, three nights give a spare day if the weather is poor. Our five-day winter plan adds Baku to the trip.
