Baku Airport to the City Centre: Bus, Taxi or Private Transfer

Heydar Aliyev International Airport is 20 km east of central Baku, says the airport’s own FAQ. The airport gives 30 minutes for the drive. You have three ways to cover it: the H1 airport bus, an official taxi, or a private transfer booked before you fly.

Each one is the right answer for someone. Here is how to tell which one is yours.

The H1 bus: cheapest, with a last leg

BakuBus runs route H1 between the airport, the Koroglu transport interchange and 28 May metro station. It says the line runs 24/7 at 15-minute intervals, and the fare is 1.30 AZN.

You cannot pay in cash on the list BakuBus gives. It names bank cards, Google Pay, Apple Pay, a BakıKart and the m10 and Birbank apps. The Tourism Board adds that a BakıKart costs 2.00 AZN at the airport and at bus stops.

The two official sources differ on night service. BakuBus gives one 15-minute interval. The Tourism Board says every 15 minutes by day and every 45 minutes at night. If you land late, plan on the longer wait.

The bus ends at a stop, not at your door. From Koroglu or 28 May you go on by metro, taxi or foot, with your bags. Our H1 bus guide covers the route in more detail.

The official taxi: decide on the day

If you have not booked anything, use the official rank. The airport says you order a taxi through the operators’ marshals outside Terminal 1, in the pick-up area on the second line.

That rank is what sets a licensed taxi apart from someone offering a ride inside the hall. The Tourism Board also notes that licensed taxi firms and several taxi apps work in Baku.

A taxi takes you to your address. What it cannot do is meet you inside, or know in advance how many bags you have.

The private transfer: settled before you land

This is the option we run. You book a car with a named driver before the flight, and you choose where you meet. The driver can stand in the arrivals hall with a board showing your name, or wait at the exit or in the car park.

We wait until you come out. Passport control can be slow and bags can take a while. Give us the flight number, and if the flight is late the driver comes for the new time at no extra cost.

Which one fits your trip

Take the bus if you travel light, land in daylight and stay near Koroglu or 28 May. For two people with cabin bags it is hard to beat.

Take the taxi if you landed without a plan and your hotel is across the city. Use the rank, not an offer in the hall.

Book a transfer if you have children, three or more suitcases, a group, or a landing after midnight. A sedan takes one large suitcase and a minivan takes up to four. With more people there is a minibus or a bus, and we provide child seats too.

Landing at night

Night is where the choice matters most. The bus still runs, but at night the wait can be longer, and the last leg from a stop is yours to solve.

Traffic into the city

The 30 minutes is the airport’s figure for the road. Traffic builds on the way into the city in the morning and the evening. If you land in those hours and have a meeting, leave room for it.
