Five winter days in Azerbaijan: Baku, Guba and Shahdag

We read WhatsApp 09:00–21:00, Baku time. We reply in English, Russian and Azerbaijani.

Best months December, January, February

Five winter days in Azerbaijan fit one city and one mountain area. This plan puts Baku first, then the snow at Shahdag, with Guba on the road between them.

It is written for families flying in from the Gulf and South Asia, often to see snow for the first time. The drive times come from our route data. Where a figure is an estimate, we say so.

Why does winter need its own plan?

A spring plan does not work in December. Three things change.

The days are short. A long drive now leaves little light at the far end. The long western roads, to Sheki and beyond, lose the most. So this plan goes north, where the snow is closest, and leaves the west for spring.

The last part of the road is mountain road. The climb above Gusar to Shahdag is where the weather on the day sets the pace. We plan to drive it in daylight, both up and down.

Some days are weather days. Snow can close a lift or slow a road. Two nights in the mountains mean one poor day does not cost you the snow.

If you have a full week and it is not winter, our seven-day itinerary covers the west as well. This page is the short winter version.

The five days at a glance

Day Where Road
1 Arrive in Baku airport to city, about 30 min
2 Baku walking and short drives
3 Baku to Shahdag, via Guba 212 km, about 3 hr 20 min
4 Shahdag no long drive
5 Shahdag to Baku or the airport about 3 hr 20 min to Baku

The airport time is the one Heydar Aliyev Airport gives. The mountain times are estimates from our route data. They allow for the slower mountain section rather than an open road.

Day 1: land, and keep it light

Treat the arrival day as half a day. Families are tired after a flight, and children most of all.

The airport is about 30 minutes from the city centre. Check in, eat, and walk the seafront for an hour if the wind is kind. Save the sights for the morning.

Day 2: Baku in winter light

Use the daylight for the outdoor parts. Put the indoor parts either side.

Start with a museum while the morning is cold. Walk the Old City, Icheri Sheher, around midday, when the light is best on the stone. Take the seafront boulevard as the sun drops. End with tea and dinner indoors.

Baku in December averages 9.7 °C by day. That is mild on paper. The wind makes it feel much colder, and children feel it first. A windproof layer and a hat matter more than a thick coat.

Day 3: north to the snow

Leave Baku early. In winter an early start is what gives you light at the other end.

Guba is the first stop, about 170 km out and roughly 2 hours 35 minutes. Have lunch there and stretch your legs. The drive then continues past Gusar and climbs to Shahdag, which the resort puts at 212 km from Baku.

Aim to arrive in the early afternoon. That leaves time to collect equipment and settle the children before dark.

Khinalug, the high village, is also reached from Guba. In winter its road is a separate decision. We only plan it after checking the road for your week.

Our guide to the northern winter route covers this road in more detail.

Day 4: a full day on the snow

This is the day the trip is built around.

Shahdag publishes its own figures. It lists 37 slopes, and 25 of them are green or blue. It has five magic carpets for small children and three ski schools. For a family that has never skied, those numbers matter more than the expert runs.

The resort does not publish fixed season dates. Check its opening date and lift status before you book flights. Our Shahdag ski guide has the full resort figures.

Many families from warm countries do not own snow clothes. Gloves, hats, warm socks and waterproof boots are the items that decide whether a child enjoys the day. Sort them out before the mountain day, not on it.

Day 5: down the mountain and home

There are two ways to end the trip.

Back to Baku. The same road, about 3 hours 20 minutes. You get a last evening in the city and a short run to the airport next day.

Straight to the airport. About 230 km and roughly 3 hours 35 minutes, also an estimate. This only works with an evening flight. For a morning flight, spend the last night in Baku instead.

Either way, we leave the mountain with light to spare. Coming down a winter road in the dark is avoidable, so we avoid it.

The Gabala variant

Gabala is the other mountain base. It is about 225 km from Baku, roughly 3 hours 25 minutes by our estimate. From the airport it is 240 km and about 3 hours 40 minutes, a figure from our own operations.

Choose Gabala or Shahdag. In five winter days, not both.

Winter weather in Baku, in numbers

These are the long-term averages published by Azerbaijan’s National Hydrometeorological Department.

Month Average high Average low Rainfall Rainy days
December 9.7 °C 4.8 °C 26 mm 6
January 6.6 °C 2.1 °C 21 mm 6
February 6.3 °C 2.0 °C 20 mm 6

Highs stay above freezing in the city, so snow in Baku is rare and short-lived. The mountains are where the snow is. Our page on Baku in winter covers each month.

For Gulf families: the visa-free window

Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain can enter Azerbaijan without a visa until 15 February 2027. The foreign ministry’s table allows three entries in that period, up to 30 days each.

That covers a trip in December, January or early February. A trip that ends after 15 February 2027 needs a fresh check. We read the ministry’s table on 24 September 2026. Rules can change, so read it again before you book.

Our page on entry for Saudi citizens explains the window, the fourth entry and the airport visa. Other passports have their own rules, set out in our visa guide.

Food, prayer and small children

Most families ask the same three questions. We answer them on separate pages rather than in a line here.

For food, see vegetarian and halal food. For prayer on the road, see praying in Azerbaijan. For the pace of a day with children, see Baku with children. A child seat can be requested in advance. We need the child’s age to choose it.

How we would run it

We do not sell this as a package. We arrange the ground: the airport pickup, the car north and back, and a driver who knows the mountain road.

Send us your arrival and departure flights, the number of adults and children, and the children’s ages. Tell us if you bring ski equipment, because it changes the car. We will send back a day-by-day plan with the driving counted honestly and the daylight built in.

Tours and transfers

Common questions

Is five days enough for Azerbaijan in winter?

Yes, for Baku and one mountain area. Two city days, two nights in the snow and a travel day between them is a calm shape. Adding the west as well turns it into a week in a car.

How far is Shahdag from Baku?

212 km, the figure the resort publishes. Our route data allows about 3 hours 20 minutes, because the last part above Gusar is mountain road.

Can we stop in Guba on the way?

Yes. Guba is about 170 km from Baku on the same road, roughly 2 hours 35 minutes. It makes a good lunch stop and leaves the last hour of driving for after the break.

Why not go to Sheki in winter?

Sheki is 330 km from Baku. On a short winter day that drive leaves little light at the far end. It suits a longer trip, or a spring visit, much better.

How cold is Baku in winter?

The long-term averages are 9.7 °C by day in December, 6.6 °C in January and 6.3 °C in February. Nights sit around 2 to 5 °C, and the mountains are much colder.

Is Shahdag good for children and beginners?

The resort lists 37 slopes, and 25 of them are green or blue. It also lists five magic carpets and three ski schools. It is a learner's resort more than an expert's.

Do Gulf citizens need a visa for this trip?

Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain can enter visa-free until 15 February 2027. The foreign ministry allows three entries, up to 30 days each. Check again before you book.

Do we need snow chains or a special car?

Not something to arrange yourself. Tell us your dates and we send a car suited to the mountain road on the day.

A day trip, an overnight route, a transfer, or a custom itinerary? Tell us and we will plan it.
