Seven days in Azerbaijan: the week that actually fits

We read WhatsApp 09:00–21:00, Baku time. We reply in English, Russian and Azerbaijani.

Essentials

Type Itinerary
Best months April, May, June, September, October

Seven days is the length where Azerbaijan gets interesting. Three days shows you Baku, five adds one region, and seven lets you reach both the west and the north without living in the car.

This is the week we would plan, with the road distances written next to the days. Where a distance is an estimate rather than a confirmed figure, we say so.

The shape of the week

Days Where Road distance
1-2 Baku —
3 Gobustan and Absheron day trip
4 Baku to Sheki, via Shamakhi 330 km, confirmed
5 Sheki —
6 Sheki to Gabala regional road
7 Gabala to Baku about 225 km, estimated

The northern alternative swaps days 4 to 7 for Guba and Shahdag, about 170 km and 212 km from Baku. More on that below.

Days 1 and 2: Baku

Give the capital two full days before you drive anywhere.

The walled Old City takes a morning. The boulevard and the seafront take an afternoon. The second day is for museums, the modern city and the food, which is the part most visitors underestimate.

Baku works without a car. The metro covers the centre, and the distances inside the old quarter are walking distances.

Day 3: Gobustan and Absheron

The rock art at Gobustan and the mud volcanoes around it are a half-day, and the Absheron peninsula fills the rest.

We do not publish a distance for the Gobustan road, because no owner-supplied or officially published figure exists and we will not invent one. It is comfortably a day trip.

Day 4: west to Sheki

This is the big driving day: 330 km, confirmed from our own operations.

Break it. Shamakhi sits 123 km out, also confirmed, and it makes a natural stop. Lahij, at 180 km, is the other option, though the last stretch is mountain road and slower than the number suggests.

Arrive in Sheki in the late afternoon and stay the night. Trying to see Sheki and return to Baku the same day is how a good day becomes a bad one.

Day 5: Sheki

Sheki earns its night. The old town, the khan’s palace, the caravanserai and the workshops are a full day at a human pace.

If you would rather add a second region than a second Sheki day, this is the day to move.

Day 6: Sheki to Gabala

The regional road between them is the pretty part of the week, and it is short enough to leave the afternoon free.

Gabala is the mountain-resort side of the country: cable car, lake, forest. In winter it is a ski base; in summer it is where people escape the heat.

Day 7: back to Baku

About 225 km, and that number is an estimate derived from the airport route rather than a confirmed figure.

Leave in the morning if your flight is that evening. A same-day drive plus a flight is doable, but it leaves no room for a puncture or a closed road.

The northern alternative

If mountains matter more than history, swap the western half.

Guba sits about 170 km from Baku, an estimate scaled from the Shahdag figure. Shahdag itself is 212 km, published by the resort. Both are a half-day drive, so each deserves a night.

In winter this becomes the stronger half of the week, because the northern mountains are where the snow is and the western route loses its daylight. Check the resort’s own opening date before you build a week around skiing.

What to change, and when

Spring and early autumn suit this week best. Summer is hot in the lowlands, so start earlier each morning. Winter closes the mountain roads at short notice, so keep a fallback day.

Arriving late at night shifts everything: treat the arrival day as a half-day and start the plan the next morning.

How we would run it

We do not sell this as a package. We arrange the ground: the airport pickup, the driver for the regional days, and the hotels where you asked for them.

Send us your arrival and departure flights, how many of you are travelling, and whether you lean historical or mountainous. We will send back a day-by-day plan with the driving honestly counted, including the days that are mostly road.

Tours and transfers

Common questions

Is seven days enough for Azerbaijan?

Yes, for the capital and two regions. It is not enough for the whole country, and a week spread too thin becomes a week in a car.

How far is Sheki from Baku?

330 km by road, a figure confirmed by our own operations. It is a half-day drive, so Sheki works as an overnight rather than a day trip.

How far is Gabala?

About 225 km. That figure is an estimate derived from the airport route, so treat it as approximate.

Can I do this itinerary without a car?

Parts of it. Baku works on the metro and on foot. The regions need a car, because the sights sit apart from the towns.

What is the best time of year for a week like this?

Spring and early autumn. Summer is hot in the lowlands, and winter closes the mountain half of the plan.

Should I book hotels in each region or stay in Baku?

Both work. Sheki and the north deserve a night each. Gobustan and Absheron are day trips from Baku.

Can the week be rearranged?

Yes, and it usually should be. Tell us your arrival time and interests and we will reorder the days around them.

A day trip, an overnight route, a transfer, or a custom itinerary? Tell us and we will plan it.
