Baku in February: coldest on paper, and barely different from January

February is the coldest month in Baku on paper, and the gap between it and January is three tenths of a degree. In practice they are the same month with different light.

What February adds is a mountain season at its deepest and a city that has been quiet for six weeks.

The weather, in numbers

Azerbaijan’s National Hydrometeorological Department puts February at 6.3 °C by day and 2.0 °C at night.

Rainfall is about 20 mm across roughly six rainy days. That is the driest of the winter months, marginally ahead of January.

So the coldest month is also the driest one. Highs stay above freezing, which means this is still a coat-and-scarf winter and still a walking city.

The wind remains the variable that matters. It separates a bright 6 °C afternoon that feels fine from one that does not. That is why the outer layer matters more than the number of layers.

Why people come in February

The mountains, mostly.

February sits in the middle of the northern season, which runs roughly December to April. Shahdag is 212 km from Baku, and by February the season has had time to settle rather than being at its start.

The city half is the same argument as January and slightly better. Six weeks past New Year, nothing is busy, nothing needs booking far out, and rates have not started climbing towards spring.

The month before Novruz

Novruz falls in March, and February is the run-up to it rather than part of it.

That matters if you are choosing between the two. Novruz is a five-day national holiday: the country is at its most welcoming and its least improvised, and it is busy and needs planning. February is the opposite, and it is cheaper.

If you want the city quiet, come now. If you want the country celebrating, come a month later.

Daylight

Days are lengthening through February, noticeably by the end of it.

That is a real difference from January, where the short afternoon is the month’s one genuine constraint. By late February there is enough light to do the Old City and the seafront in one day without rushing either.

What to pack

Exactly what January needs. A windproof outer layer, a scarf, gloves and shoes with grip.

Add sunglasses. Cold bright days are common here in late winter, and the light coming off the Caspian is stronger than the temperature suggests.
