Shahdag or Tufandag: choosing a ski resort in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan has two ski resorts that visitors ask about: Shahdag and Tufandag. They are both in the Greater Caucasus, both a half-day drive from Baku, and both open in winter. After that, they differ a lot.
Shahdag is the big one. It is higher, it has more runs, and it publishes a snowmaking figure. Tufandag, in Gabala, is smaller and lower. It is built around four cable cars, which also work for people who do not ski.
Every figure below comes from the resort’s own website, checked on 24 September 2026. Where a resort does not publish a figure, the table says so. We do not fill the gap.
The two resorts side by side
| Point | Shahdag | Tufandag |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Near Gusar, in the north | Duruja village, Gabala, in the north-west |
| From Baku by road | 212 km, published by the resort | approx. 225 km to Gabala |
| Drive from Baku | about 3 h 20 min, our estimate | approx. 3 h 25 min |
| From Baku airport | approx. 230 km | 240 km, about 3 h 40 min |
| Highest ski point | 2,552 m | 1,920 m |
| Slopes | 37: 8 green, 17 blue, 8 red, 4 black | 10: 2 beginner, 3 intermediate, 2 professional, 3 expert |
| Length of runs | 45 km of skiable area | the ten runs add up to about 12.5 km |
| Lifts | 20: 3 gondolas, 10 chairlifts, 2 platter lifts, 5 magic carpets | 4 cable cars; a bugel lift and a magic carpet are listed without a count |
| Snowmaking | 532 snow guns | not published |
| Ski school | 3 schools | lessons in Azerbaijani, Russian and English |
Two notes on the table. Tufandag grades its runs as beginner, intermediate, professional and expert. That is not the same scale as Shahdag’s colours, so do not read one as the other.
The 12.5 km figure is our own sum of the ten run lengths Tufandag lists. The resort does not state a total.
Which one is better for a first ski trip?
For most first-timers, Shahdag. It has 25 green and blue runs against 12 red and black ones. It also has five magic carpets, the moving walkways that carry children and beginners up the practice slope. The resort’s own page also lists a kindergarten and a kids club.
Tufandag also has a beginner area and a ski school. Its lessons run in groups or one to one. The site says they are taught in Azerbaijani, Russian and English. For a family from the Gulf or South Asia, that last point matters. It means you can ask for an English lesson directly.
The honest difference is size. Tufandag has two runs marked beginner. After a day or two, a fast learner may run out of easy terrain there. At Shahdag, there are 17 blue runs to move on to.
Which one is better for good skiers?
Shahdag again, on the numbers. Its ski area reaches 2,552 m, and it has 12 red and black runs. Its 532 snow guns cover the whole skiable area, according to the resort. That makes it less dependent on a snowy winter.
Tufandag has five runs graded professional or expert, and some are steep. The resort lists three expert runs at more than 40 degrees. But its highest run starts at 1,920 m, and it does not publish a snowmaking figure. We make no claim about its snow. Check its live cameras and the lift page before you go.
The cable cars at Tufandag
This is where Tufandag is different. Its four cable cars climb from 956 m up to 1,920 m.
| Cable car | From | To | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riverside | 956 m | 1,660 m | 2,500 m |
| Gabala | 1,251 m | 1,660 m | 1,000 m |
| Duruja | 1,251 m | 1,410 m | 1,170 m |
| Yatmish Gozal | 1,410 m | 1,920 m | 1,130 m |
The resort sells cable car tickets on their own, without a ski pass. So a grandparent, or anyone who does not ski, can ride up the mountain with the rest of the family. On the day we checked, in September, two of the lines were listed as open.
The ticket page sets child tickets for ages 6 to 11, and adult tickets from 12. On 24 September 2026 it also listed night skiing on Saturdays. Both can change, so check again before you travel.
Getting there from Baku
The two resorts are on different roads out of Baku. Shahdag is to the north, past Guba and Gusar. Gabala is to the north-west. So one trip does not cover both well.
Shahdag is 212 km from Baku, a distance the resort publishes. We estimate the drive at about 3 h 20 min. The last section climbs into the mountains, and winter weather can slow it.
Gabala is approx. 225 km from Baku, and the drive is approx. 3 h 25 min. The road has more than one route, so the distance changes with the road the driver takes. From Heydar Aliyev Airport, it is 240 km and about 3 h 40 min, figures from our own operations.
Neither resort works well as a day trip. Seven hours in a car leaves little time on the snow. Plan at least one night near the slopes, and two if children are learning.
What we cannot tell you yet
Neither resort publishes its winter opening date on the pages we read. We will not guess one. Check both resorts’ own channels from November. We will check this page again before 1 December 2026.
We also do not show ski pass, lesson or hotel prices here. Both resorts publish their own, and they change by season. Ask us with your dates, and we will send the current figures for your trip.
How to choose in one minute
Choose Shahdag if:
- someone in your group is a keen or improving skier
- you want the most easy runs for beginners and children
- you want the resort with published snowmaking
Choose Tufandag if:
- some of the family will not ski but want to ride up the mountain
- you want English lessons in a smaller, quieter setting
- you want to combine skiing with Gabala’s other sights
How we help
We do not sell a ski package off the shelf. We arrange the transfer from the airport or from Baku, and a car big enough for skis and bags. We can also book the hotel you choose.
Send us your dates, the number of adults and children, and who will ski. Tell us if you are bringing your own equipment. We will reply with a plan and the current prices for your dates.

Common questions
How many ski resorts does Azerbaijan have?
Two that most visitors mean: Shahdag, in the north near Gusar, and Tufandag, in Gabala in the north-west. Both are a half-day drive from Baku.
Which resort is bigger?
Shahdag, clearly. It lists 37 slopes and 20 lifts. Tufandag lists 10 slopes and 4 cable cars.
Which is better for a first-time skier?
Both have a beginner area and a ski school. Shahdag has more easy runs and five magic carpets. Tufandag is smaller, which some beginners find less confusing.
Can I ski near Baku as a day trip?
Only just. Both resorts are more than 200 km from Baku by road, so a day trip means about seven hours in a car. We suggest one night at least.
Do the instructors speak English?
Tufandag says its lessons are taught in Azerbaijani, Russian and English. Shahdag says its three schools have national and international instructors.
When does the ski season open?
Neither resort publishes an opening date on the pages we checked on 24 September 2026. Check again from November, and before you book flights around skiing.
Can non-skiers in the family enjoy the trip?
Yes. Tufandag sells cable car rides on their own, and both resorts list other winter activities. Ask us to plan around the people who will not ski.
Do you sell ski packages?
No fixed package. We arrange the transfer, and hotels if you ask. Send your dates and group size and we will check the current options.
