Azerbaijan Visa for UK Citizens: How the e-Visa Works

UK citizens need a visa to visit Azerbaijan. The simplest route is the ASAN e-visa. You apply online, pay by card and get the visa by email. There is no embassy visit and no sticker in your passport. This page covers the ordinary rule for a British passport. It applies all year, whether you come for Baku, the mountains or a Formula 1 weekend.

The United Kingdom is not on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa-free list. It is not on the airport visa list either. It is on the official list of e-visa countries. So, for a normal tourist trip, the e-visa is your route.

What the e-visa costs and how long it takes

The state fee is USD 20. On top of that, the portal charges a USD 9 service fee. You pay both online with a Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay or JCB card. The card does not have to be in your name. The fee is charged for reviewing the form. It is not refunded if the visa is refused.

A standard e-visa is issued within three working days. Apply at least three working days before you land. An urgent e-visa is issued within three hours, even on weekends and holidays. The portal shows the urgent price when you choose it. We do not quote it here.

The result arrives by email. If the email does not come, you can check the status on the portal with your application details.

What the visa allows

The e-visa is single entry. It is valid for 90 days. Within that window you may stay up to 30 days. If you leave, you need a new visa to come back.

That is plenty for most trips. A long weekend in Baku fits easily. So does a week that adds Sheki, Gabala or the Caspian coast. If you plan more than 30 days, the e-visa is the wrong tool. Ask the embassy about other visa types before you book.

Passport and form: the details that cause refusals

Your passport must stay valid for at least three months after the e-visa expires. Check the expiry date first. A British passport close to renewal can fail this test.

Upload a clear scan of the photo page. The portal rejects the form if the system cannot read the scan. Enter your name and passport number exactly as printed.

Dual citizens need extra care. Apply on the passport you will travel with. If you apply on one passport and travel on another, the e-visa is invalid. Decide before you start the form.

Print the e-visa. The conditions say you show it with your passport at the border. A copy on your phone is a useful backup, not a replacement.

Family and group applications

One form can cover a family of 2 to 10 people. A group form covers 10 to 300 people. Each traveller still needs their own valid passport. Check each name before you pay, because one error can hold up the whole booking.

Registration after 15 days

Foreign visitors who stay more than 15 days must register their place of stay. You must do this within 15 days of arrival. It is free. The State Migration Service explains how to apply. A typical UK holiday of a week or two does not reach this point. Still, check your dates if you plan a long stay.

Coming for a future Baku Grand Prix

Many UK visitors first look at Azerbaijan for the Formula 1 race. For the 2026 race there was a special arrangement. A presidential order of 25 August 2026 let F1 visitors get a visa at the international airports. You showed a race ticket, an e-ticket or an accreditation card. The window was set from 25 August to 30 September 2026. The Azerbaijani embassy in London published the same notice.

That order was written for the 2026 race only. A later race would need its own order. So plan a future race trip on the ordinary e-visa. If a new race-week rule is announced, it will come from official channels. Until you see it there, do not rely on it.

Race week adds pressure to every date. Apply for the e-visa as soon as your flights and hotel are fixed. Choose standard processing and keep the three-day window free of stress. The urgent option exists, but it should not be your plan.

From the airport into Baku

Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) is Baku’s main airport. The Aero Express bus runs around the clock. The airport says the ride to the last stop takes about 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

If you land late, or travel with family and bags, a booked car is simpler. RH Travel can meet you with a name board. You choose where: in the arrivals hall, at the exit or in the car park. A short checklist

Before you fly, check these points:

1. Passport valid for three months beyond the e-visa.
2. E-visa approved, printed and matching that passport.
3. Hotel address saved offline.
4. A plan for the airport journey.
5. A card and a little cash in manats for small costs.

With those done, entry on a UK passport is routine.
